Muscat-Nakhal-Wadi Bani Awf-Jabal Shams (Grand Canyon)-Nizwa
We shall set out for Nakhal, home to the spectacular Nakhal Fortress. Situated in a quaint village surrounded by lush date palm plantations, this 1500-year-old fortress stands tall amongst the rocky mountain terrain and has kept a vigilant guard of its majestic power since times of yore. Take a walk through its refurbished interior, where every room is decked out in the old-style décor. From the top of this imposing structure, enjoy magnificent views of distant peaks and abundant plantations.
From there, we travel to Wadi Bani Awf. We’ll pass Snake Canyon and many villages before arriving at Balad Sayt, surrounded by majestic mountains. After that, we ascend Jebel Shams – known as the Great Canyon of Oman – reaching a staggering 3009 meters for an unforgettable off-road experience and spectacular views. At 2000 meters, we make a stop to appreciate and take pictures of the canyon view before continuing our journey towards Nizwa, where we’ll spend our first night on tour.
- Overnight in Nizwa or Jabal Shams
Nizwa Fort and Soaq (Market) - Wahiba Sands.
Nizwa Souq (market) will be visited, where a wide variety of vendors sell their goods in the streets, where you can find a variety of items, including vegetables, pottery, jewellery, handicrafts, Omani sweets (Halwa), dates spice, and souvenirs, all of which are available in authentic old market halls. A particularly interesting Friday cattle market takes place when locals from nearby villages sell goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens in a circus-style open market.
Next to the Souq is Oman Fortress, a museum and fortification that displays views of this ancient town and its encompassing mountains. Walking around the impressive structure, one can explore its many chambers, corridors and towers, which form an architectural testament to the economic and military achievements of the early Yaruba dynasty from the mid-17th century. Built to withstand powerful assaults, it contained traps along its passages as a deterrent against intruders.
In the afternoon, we make our way to our desert camp in the Wahiba Sands, previously known as Al Sharqiya Sands. This grand desert has a coverage of 12,500 Square K.M across the northern and southern Governorates of Oman’s Eastern Region with a boundary spanning 180 K.M (110 mi) from north to south and 80 KM (50 mi) east to west. Then it’s time for adventure! 4×4 sand dune drives here are unparalleled and there can be no sight more beautiful than the setting sun on one of the tallest dunes. To finish off your day in bliss, dinner awaits you at the camp before you close off with a peaceful evening.
- Overnight in Desert Camp
Wahiba Sands- Wadi Bani Khalid- Sur- Ras Al Had
In the morning, we will enjoy a slow breakfast at the Desert Camp, followed by a trip to Wadi Bani Khalid, one of Oman’s largest and most beautiful wadis. Once you reach the magnificent Wadi, you will need to walk approximately 10 to 15 minutes to reach sparkling clear water pools 9 meters deep, perfect for swimming and relaxing in the picturesque Wadi Canyon.
Following our tour of Ras Al Hadd, we check into our hotel/resort for the night. In the evening, following the buffet dinner, we will take you to Ras Al Jinz Turtle Sanctuary for a guided walking tour under the stars on the beach at night, where we may see Omanis great sea turtles stumble onto the beach to lay their eggs and build nests. If you are lucky, you may even see baby turtles hatching from some nests.
- Overnight in Ras Al Hadd (Turtle Beach Resort)
Ras Al Hadd- Wadi Shab- Sinkhole- Muscat
Today we will take you on a journey to Wadi Shab, where you will get to hike up this amazing canyon gorge dotted with palm trees. The power of nature is clearly visible here, and it will take approximately 45 minutes to walk along the canyon (remember your walking shoes!). At the end of your journey awaits a pool of crystal-clear warm water that allows swimming from one pool to another. Upon reaching the last pool, you can dive into an awe-inspiring crevice cave with a mini waterfall inside. As the sunlight pierces in from the outside, it illuminates the shallow water with an enchanting turquoise blue colour, as showers cascade down one side of the cave from the Wadi beyond.
After visiting Wadi Shab, you should head to the Bimmah Sinkhole, which is located between Dibab and the village of Bimmah. This lake of turquoise water is 50 m by 70 m wide and approximately 20 m deep, and it’s only 600 m away from the sea. It was formed when the surface layer collapsed due to limestone dissolution. To preserve this natural wonder, a municipal park has been developed around it – swimming in its waters is possible!
- We drive back to Muscat after visiting Sinkhole.
